1971 M816 Military 5T wrecker

Recommended Posts

The M816 Medium Wrecker is part of the M809 series of 5-ton 6x6 military trucks. It was made by AM General starting in 1970. It has a revolving hydraulic crane with an extending boom that can extend from 10–18 ft with a maximum lift capacity of 20,000 lb with outriggers and boom jacks to the ground. The boom capacity depends on boom extension and placements of truck outriggers and boom jacks. With boom full out and no outriggers, the capacity is only 3000 lb. The boom elevates to 45 degrees, swings 270.

I had Mahoney and Sons in Northwood NH go through it, as I got it it would not start and run. It also had brake issues.

They've done their magic and it's ready to go.  855 Cubic inch Cummins 240hp non turbo Diesel. 5 speed manual trans. All the filters have been swapped to common over the road tractor filters and all the fluids done. They also did one hydro wheel cylinder and adjusted all the other brakes. It's ready for work or parade duty.  I had Jeep Nasty flat tow it over to Mahoney's behind the RV we built :).

10k, interesting trades obro.

about 20K lbs, at least 10' in the air . 10k at 20' - I've done that weight with my other one, anyway.

They have juice brakes, register as an antique.

Just dreaming. It wouldn't be practical for me. I need a flatbed with a knuckle crane.

Heh, ok. I have one of those, too... some assembly required.

 Want a dump bed?

Dump with drop sides and crane would be wanking material.

Easily done. Mil M923 bed has 3 drop sides, cut down from 14' on a hydro dump, with that knuckle boom in front of it. Truck already has a pto and hydro pump.  I have all the parts.  Can also put it on smaller than the 53" tires...
